Pollack sidelined for '07
David Pollack will not play for the Bengals -
this year. The Bengals announced Friday that the linebacker
would not play in 2007, but Pollack has not made a
final decision about whether he will play again at
all. Pollack suffered a neck fracture while making
a tackle early in the Bengals' game against the Cleveland
Browns last Sept. 17. He missed the remainder of the
season and underwent surgery to repair the fracture
Jan. 3. His recovery is ongoing, and he suffered no
paralysis. "I'm grateful for my recovery to this point,
and I'm working every day to get my full strength
back," Pollack said in a statement issued by the Bengals'
public relations department. "Any final decision on
football is still down the road for me." The statement
also quoted head coach Marvin Lewis, who never has
hidden his fondness for Pollack as a player and as
a person. more>

Horse can't cover No. 85
The estimated crowd of 8,000 at River Downs roared
approval for Johnson, the Bengals wide receiver who
said his runaway win would jump-start a side career
in doing sporting stunts for charity. "Floyd Mayweather,
you're next," he said. "I want to fight you. I'd like
to take Kobe (Bryant) and LeBron (James) one-on-one.
Jeff Gordon, we can take a couple laps." Johnson's win
against Restore the Roar legitimized his pre-race predictions.
"Look at him over there," Johnson said, pointing to
Restore the Roar, dancing about on his way to the track.
"This is how DBs feel before the game. |
Joseph injures foot at minicamp
The Bengals suffered a minor setback at minicamp
over the weekend when cornerback Johnathan Joseph suffered
a foot injury. Coach Marvin Lewis said the second-year
cornerback is expected to be ready for the start of
training camp. "He will be in a cast or a boot for a
little bit," Lewis said, following the Bengals' completion
of their fifth and final practice of mandatory minicamp.
"He should be ready to go at the start of camp without
his shoe."He fell after cutting to cover wide receiver
Chad Johnson. |
Bengals part with LB Simmons
The release of Simmons, who played all nine of
his NFL seasons for Cincinnati, is probably a move that
will allow the Bengals to re-sign some of their own
unrestricted free agents. The Bengals estimated they
had less than $100,000 to spend on their free agents
after accounting for players already under contract,
the franchise tag for defensive end Justin Smith, their
restricted free agents, rookie draft picks and other
player-related costs. Simmons made 115 starts and played
in 121 games in nine seasons. He missed five games in
2006 because of a neck strain. |
Free agency will force Bengals to make decisions
The team is about $15-$20 million under the salary
cap, which is expected to be $109 million this season.
But the money allotted for draft picks, tender offers
to their restricted free agents, the signing of unrestricted
free agents and some injury protection means the Bengals
will be at or near the cap when the season starts. The
scouting service ranks seven Bengals among its top 99
free agents. |
Bengals vets angry, embarrassed by latest arrest
The arrest of Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Johnathan
Joseph has members of the team angry, embarrassed and
concerned that guilt by association has ruined public
perception of the team. The team's front office did
not comment on the latest arrest, saying its policy
is to not comment on pending legal matters. But in his
end-of-season news conference, coach Marvin Lewis said
he would be far stricter with the team in 2007. "If
it doesn't stop, we're not going to have any fans left,
and I don't blame them. It's ridiculous," Palmer said
in comments posted on the team Web site. |
Palmer nominated for honor
Palmer was announced by the Bengals as their winner
of the Ed Block Courage Award. The award honors NFL
players who demonstrate commitment to the values of
sportsmanship and courage. Each of the 32 NFL teams
selects one player as its nominee. Palmer will be honored
with the other team winners at the annual awards banquet
in Baltimore on March 20. Palmer started every game
for the Bengals in 2006, returning from a serious knee
injurys uffered in the 2005 season playoffs against
Pittsburgh. His hard work during rehabilitation helped
him start the regular season opener Sept. 10, just eight
months to the day since his reconstructive surgery. |
Bengals hike ticket prices $5
Bengals tickets will increase $5 per game in 2007,
the team announced January 13th. The 2007 increase will
likely result in a general admission ticket price below
the league average, the team said. For the 2006 season,
the Bengals' average season ticket price ranked 22nd
of 32 in the NFL - more than $4 per game below the league
average, the Bengals said. The Bengals will have regular-season
home games against AFC North division rivals Pittsburgh,
Cleveland and Baltimore in 2007 - plus games against
New England, the New York Jets, Arizona, St. Louis and
Tennessee. Opponents for the Bengals' two preseason
home games have yet to be announced by the NFL. The
Bengals will enter the 2007 season with a 28-game home
sellout streak dating to November 2003. |
Pollack has surgery to repair fracture
Bengals linebacker David Pollack underwent surgery
Wednesday to repair the neck fracture he suffered on
Sept. 17. Dr. Anthony Guanciale performed the surgery
and, in a release from the team, said the procedure
went without complications. Pollack will remain hospitalized
for a few days and Guanciale will monitor his progress
in the coming months. No forecast for his recovery or
a return to playing football is being made at this time,
according to the release. Head coach Marvin Lewis did
address the subject of Pollack during a press conference
on Tuesday. "It will be, No. 1, what actual surgery
is done and what the surgeon feels which repairs are
needed," said Lewis. "From that, David will have to
make a decision on what is in his future as far as football." |
What about next years 2007 Bengals?
The Cincinnati Bengals will host the following
teams at home: Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New
England, New York Jets, Arizona, St. Louis, Tennessee
The Bengals will be on the road against the following
teams: Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Miami,
San Francisco, Seattle and Kansas City.
The Bengals will draft No. 18 overall. CB Rashad Bauman,
CB Tory James, QB Doug Johnson, S Kevin Kaesviharn,
TE Reggie Kelly, G Scott Kooistra, S Anthony Mitchell,
DE Justin Smith, G Eric Steinbach, TE Tony Stewart,
WR Kelley Washington, RB Kenny Watson and LB Marcus
Wilkins are all unrestricted free agents. |
Yet another Bengal arrested
Cornerback Deltha O'Neal became the eighth Bengals
player arrested this calendar year early Saturday. San
Diego is second in the league with five player arrests.
O'Neal, 29, was charged with operating a vehicle under
the influence after he was stopped at 12:20 a.m. at
an OVI checkpoint near Amelia in Clermont County. O'Neal's
was one of 531 vehicles passing through an Ohio Highway
Patrol stop near Bach Buxton Road in Pierce Township
on Ohio 125. Four drivers, including O'Neal, were cited
for OVI (or DUI). |
McNeal elbows officer, charged with resisting arrest
HOUSTON -- Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver
Reggie McNeal was arrested in Houston and charged with
resisting arrest after being refused entrance to a nightclub
early Sunday. McNeal, a former Texas A&M quarterback,
was arrested outside The Red Door, said Houston police
spokesman Gabe Ortiz on Monday. Ortiz said McNeal approached
two officers who were standing near the entrance and
became unruly when the officers told him the club was
closing. McNeal "became aggressive and started using
profanity" when the officers refused to let him enter,
Ortiz said. |
Bengals RB Perry injured
CLEVELAND (Nov. 26, 2006) -- Cincinnati running
back Chris Perry broke his right leg in the second quarter
of the team's 30-0 win over the Cleveland Browns. As
he was being tackled on a 10-yard run, Perry got his
legs rolled on by Browns linebacker Andra Davis. Perry
has rushed for 57 yards on 10 carries this season. Suddenly
back in the chase for an AFC wild card berth, by virtue
of two straight victories, the resurgent Cincinnati
Bengals are suddenly without versatile tailback Chris
Perry. Again. The Bengals activated running back Chris
Perry from the physically-unable-to-perform list only
to see him back briefly before breaking his leg on his
first and only carry against the Cleveland Browns. |
Another Record for Chad
Chad Johnson's 450 receiving yards in 2 consecutive
games is a new NFL record. San Francisco 49ers John
Taylor held the previous record of 448 in 1989. He had
162 and 286. Ocho Cinco had six receptions for 190 yards
in the 31-16 victory against the Saints. He had 11 for
a franchise record 260 at home against San Diego.Carl
Pickens had the previous franchise record of receiving
yards in consecutive games, 324, in 1998. He had 120
and 204 against Baltimore and Pittsburgh. |
Housh your mouth: Radio host fired after spat with
WR
Longtime Cincinnati sports radio commentator Andy
Furman was fired Wednesday, nearly a month after calling
Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh a "racist"
during station WLW's weeknight sports talk show, according
to a report Wednesday in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Furman
made the comments on Oct. 6, one day after Houshmandzadeh
failed to make a scheduled, paid appearance on the show.
|
Houshmandzadeh among AFC award winners
Houshmandzadeh caught 9 passes, including two fourth-quarter
touchdowns, for a 28-20 road victory against division
rival Pittsburgh. Playing in his first game of the season
following a heel injury, Houshmandzadeh hauled in four
first-half receptions, two coming on third-down plays
to move the chainsFollowing a Pittsburgh fumble on its
ensuing possession, on the very next play once again,
Houshmandzadeh (6-1, 199) made a 30-yard circus catch
for his second touchdown and a 28-17 cushion. |
Thurman
busted in OVI check
Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman told police he
had "a couple of beers" and he was driving because his
teammates in the SUV "had more than I did" when he was
stopped at 3:05 a.m. today and charged with driving
under the influence of alcohol. Thurman was one of at
least three players in a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe stopped
by police in the East End. The vehicle is owned by Bengals
rookie wide receiver Reggie McNeal, who was a passenger,
said a source at the scene. |
Bengals
extend Palmer's contract through 2014
The
Cincinnati Bengals gave quarterback Carson Palmer a
six-year contract extension through 2014, aiming to
bring long-term success to a franchise finally having
its breakthrough season. Palmer, who won the Heisman
Trophy at Southern California in 2003, was under contract
through 2008. The extension gives the Bengals more salary-cap
flexibility for next season and it also sends a message
that the Bengals are serious about winning for years
to come. |
